Understanding each component

Medical expenses — 20%

You get 20% back on qualifying out-of-pocket medical costs. The relief applies at the standard rate (20%) regardless of your income tax rate. There is no upper limit — the more you spent, the more you get back. You can aggregate costs for your whole household on one return.

Flat rate expenses — 20% or 40%

Revenue assigns a fixed allowance to qualifying occupations — a fixed sum you can deduct from income before tax is calculated. The tax saving depends on your rate: a nurse on the higher rate saves 40% × €733 = €293; on the standard rate, it's 20% × €733 = €147.

Remote working — 30% of costs

If you worked from home, you can claim 30% of your broadband, electricity and heat costs that are attributable to WFH days. Revenue uses the formula: (WFH days ÷ total working days) × annual cost × 30%. The relief is applied at your marginal tax rate (20% or 40%).
