Most PAYE workers are owed a refund they've never claimed. This guide covers every relief, how to claim via Revenue myAccount, and how to go back 4 years.
If you have paid income tax in Ireland and have not claimed all the reliefs you are entitled to, Revenue owes you money. Common situations:
| Relief | Rate | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Medical expenses | 20% of costs | Any taxpayer — claim for whole family |
| Flat rate expenses | 20%–40% of set amount | Qualifying occupations only |
| Remote working | 30% of WFH costs | Employees working from home |
| Rent Tax Credit | 20% of rent, max €1,000 | Private tenants (not HAP) |
| Pension contributions | 20%–40% | PAYE and self-employed |
| Home Carer Credit | €1,800 | Married couples — one carer at home |
| Single Person Child Carer Credit | €1,750 | Single parents caring for a child |
Go to revenue.ie → myAccount. You can sign in with MyGovID or create an account using your PPSN, date of birth and phone number.
Select the tax year you want to review. You can do this for each year from 2022 onwards.
Work through each category: Health, Employment (flat rate), Remote Working, Housing (Rent Tax Credit). Each section asks a few simple questions.
Revenue calculates your revised tax position and any refund owed. A refund is paid to your bank account within 5–10 working days.
Repeat the process for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Each year is claimed separately.
If you are self-employed, a company director or have non-PAYE income, you file an annual Form 11 (income tax return) by 31 October (or mid-November via ROS). All reliefs are claimed as part of this return. You can also file amended returns for previous years to claim refunds you missed.
We review your PAYE taxes — up to 4 years, all credits (medical, flat-rate, remote working and more). Most clients get back more than they expect.
The total depends on your income, tax rate and which reliefs apply. Some illustrative examples:
| Profile | Annual refund estimate |
|---|---|
| Standard rate taxpayer with €2,000 in medical bills | €400 |
| Nurse (flat rate + medical) | €500–€800 |
| Teacher (flat rate + WFH 100 days) | €200–€400 |
| Private renter (Rent Tax Credit 2022–2026) | Up to €4,250 |
| Family with children (medical + school costs) | Varies widely |

Any PAYE employee or self-assessed taxpayer in Ireland can claim a refund if they have overpaid income tax. This commonly happens when you have unclaimed reliefs — medical expenses, flat rate expenses, remote working costs, rent tax credit or pension contributions.
PAYE employees claim via Revenue myAccount at revenue.ie. Log in, go to Review Your Tax → PAYE Services → Review Your Tax, select the year and claim any eligible reliefs. Self-assessed taxpayers file an annual Form 11.
You can claim a tax refund for the current tax year and the 4 preceding years. In 2026, that means you can claim for 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Once you submit a claim via myAccount, Revenue typically processes refunds within 5–10 working days. The refund is paid to your bank account. Some claims with supporting documentation may take longer if Revenue requests verification.
No. You can claim a refund directly via Revenue myAccount for free. However, a tax adviser can check your full tax position and identify reliefs you may have missed — which often results in a larger refund than you would find on your own.
Most reliefs can be claimed without uploading documents initially — Revenue may request them afterwards. For medical expenses, keep all receipts (GP, consultant, pharmacist, etc.). For flat rate expenses, no documents are needed. For remote working, keep utility bills.
